What exactly is S tronic? Features and technical parameters of the gearbox

S tronic is an automatic transmission with dual clutch, which Audi models have been equipped with since 2005. Before that, like other Volkswagen Group vehicles, it was called DSG. It combines the advantages of automatic and manual transmissions to ensure optimal user comfort. If desired, the driver can also change gears manually. A set of S tronic gearboxes is a copy of the DSG gearbox that the Volkswagen Group installs in a large number of Škoda, SEAT and Volkswagen brand vehicles. Some of them are specially designed for longitudinal engines and can only be found in various Audi models.

How does S tronic work?

The gearbox construction is provided with two main shafts with an odd and an even number of gears, each of which is connected to the respective clutch. When a gear is engaged, the electronic transmission control analyzes the signals from the various sensors, while gear selection is to be activated on the second axle. To switch to manual mode, push the selector lever into the corresponding recess or use the shift paddles.
