Geartronic is a manual transmission with a hydraulic torque converter and is equipped with a manual mode, which is used in Volvo passenger and commercial vehicles. This was marketed in the 1990s. Almost every model of this brand is now equipped with it. Manual mode allows the driver to keep the car under control when needed. among other things to optimize off-road performance or driving dynamics under certain driving conditions.
How Geartronic works
By default, Geartronic acts as an automatic transmission, calculating and changing the ratio between gears independently. To switch to manual, the driver pushes the shift lever to the “+S-” position and then to the “+” or “-” position, depending on which gear he wants to shift into. Many modern Volvo models also have shift paddles to operate the manual transmission. Once the driver has switched to manual mode, the color of the “+S-” indicator on the dashboard will turn orange, showing which gear is engaged.
