What is necessary to repair a car seat burn?

You should remember that a burn hole in your car seat is not only ugly, but also carries the risk of secondary damage. It has often happened that this hole in the cover keeps ripping open and you end up having to replace the cover or install a completely new seat. At the beginning of such damage, however, it is usually sufficient to close the small hole again.

Nowadays there are many companies that fall under the collective term „Smart Repair“ offer a whole range of smaller services. This includes, for example, removing a burn hole from your car seat. It also includes the removal of small dents and scratches in the paint or stains on covers or the headliner. Such work often costs comparatively little, but removing a burn hole in the car usually costs around 100 euros. You can save yourself that money if you try to do it yourself. However, you should bear in mind that it can't be that easy to close the burn hole in the car seat so that you can no longer see it afterwards.

The repair of Burn holes for the self-confident

If you dare to repair the seat yourself, you can proceed as described below, for example. You need suitable repair material, nail scissors or a very sharp box cutter/scalpel, tweezers, a small wooden popsicle stick or a toothpick and a special fiber adhesive. Alternatively, use hot glue in ball or powder form for gluing. You will also need baking paper and an iron for this.

  1. Cleaning the burn hole in the car seat
To ensure that the subsequent work is not in vain and that everything holds up well in the end, you must first of all clean your burn hole in the car very thoroughly. In addition to water, alcohol is particularly suitable for this. This is a standard solvent (alcohol) which you can get at low prices from specialist retailers or your hardware store. As a result of burning, the hole often has hard areas around the edge that have melted together. You should remove these very carefully with a very sharp carpet knife or very fine nail scissors. Alternatively, you can also use an appropriate scalpel if you have one.

  2. Cut a matching piece of fabric and insert
Get a suitable fabric; preferably the same one from which your seat covers are made. You now have to cut this to a suitable size. The whole thing also works in the same way with a leather cover, but then only with a suitable piece of leather. In terms of size, the piece for the repair must of course be slightly larger than the hole itself. The patch is then pushed between the seat cover and the upholstery to remove the burn hole in the car. If there is an extremely deep burn hole in the car seat, some foam or a similar material may have to be pushed into the hole beforehand to fill it up. It is best to use the tweezers and the wooden popsicle stick, because this is how the patch and the filling material can usually be positioned particularly well.
  3. Glue the repair patch in place
Now it's a matter of attaching the patch for repair so that it stays where it belongs. You should make sure that you get a suitable adhesive in advance. The difficult part of this job is applying the glue only to the areas where the seat cover and repair patch overlap. After all, you don't want to see any glue residue on your car seat at the end, you just want to remove the burn hole. A suitable adhesive would be, for example, a special fiber adhesive for car seats. You can apply this with a wooden popsicle stick or a toothpick, for example. An interesting alternative can be hot glue in the form of small beads or powder. This is then positioned on the corresponding edges. Then place a sheet of baking paper on the seat and then indirectly heat the hot glue with an iron. This is how you create a secure adhesive bond.
  4. Dry after repair
After you have completed the repair, the glue must have sufficient drying time in the classic method. In the variant with the hot glue, however, it only has to cool down sufficiently to be able to be loaded again.

A tip from CarTipsandmore: If you cannot find a shop where you can find a suitable fabric for the repair, you will have to look for a comparable fabric. You can then glue the corresponding fibers of a second fabric to this afterwards in such a way that a comparable structure is created. This is the best way to conceal your seat repairs.
