What does SI Drive mean? Description and principle of operation

At the SI-Drive is an intelligent engine and transmission control system installed in Subaru brand vehicles. It can be used to adapt the performance of important vehicle units to the road conditions and individual driving style. It also helps save fuel and improves driving comfort and safety.

How the SI-Drive system works

The system adjusts the performance of the engine, transmission, powertrain and other systems according to the selected driving mode. There are 3 modes:

  • Intelligent (I): This mode is designed to increase the vehicle's fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness. It optimizes the opening speed and angle of the throttle valve to achieve the smoothest possible acceleration. It is suitable for short city trips in everyday life. This mode improves handling on slippery road surfaces.
  • Sport (S): This mode offers an optimal combination of dynamics, handling, comfort and fuel efficiency. In this mode, the speed of the throttle is increased, and as a result, the car accelerates faster. The handling also becomes more accurate.
  • Sport Sharp (S#): This mode allows the vehicle to react directly to the driver's actions by opening the throttle quickly and holding the lower gears. On versions with continuously variable transmission, the driver can also change gears manually.

A rotary knob installed on the center console is used to change modes. Information about the selected settings is displayed on the dashboard screen.
