Protronic is a continuously variable transmission equipped with a manual shift function is. They are installed in cars from PROTON Holdings Berhad, the largest car manufacturer in Malaysia. This gearbox is available in almost all modern models of this brand.
How Protronic works
The Protronic gearbox based on the VT3 CVT was manufactured by Punch Powertrain from Belgium. In automatic mode, the transmission ratio between the gears is continuously adapted to the current driving situation. The driver also has the option of selecting sport mode for a sportier setting of the transmission.
When activating manual mode, the electronic control module locks the gear ratio at a certain point. To shift to a higher or lower gear, the driver uses the shift paddles marked “+” and “-“.
