The Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) is a dual-clutch automatic transmission fitted to Porsche models. It can be operated manually and combines the advantages of an automatic and manual transmission. It is the ideal solution for sports cars as it offers excellent driving dynamics, shifts instantaneously (up to 100 ms), is extremely efficient and contributes to fuel savings. Switching takes place with almost no power interruption. In addition, the automatic mode enables comfortable daily driving.
In 1985, the PDK was introduced as an option for the Porsche 962 racing model. Since 2008, models of this brand for public roads have been equipped with a modified version. The 911 Carrera is the first production car to be equipped with a PDK transmission.

How the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) works
The PDK consists of two modules that are connected to the engine via two parallel clutches. One clutch engages odd gears, the other even gears. The desired gear is engaged with the help of electro-hydraulic forks. The modern models have an 8-speed PDK gearbox: the first 6 are for a sporty driving style, the other 2 for economical and comfortable driving.
The transmission software has also been programmed as automatic for the different modes of operation: Normal, Individual, Sport, Sport Plus and, in some cases, Track. Manual shifting is done by moving the shifter on the center console to select a higher or lower gear. This can also be done with the buttons on the steering wheel.
