How the Mercedes 722.4 (W4A020) works
The Mercedes 722.4 (W4A020) is a standard automatic transmission with a hydraulic torque converter and planetary gear sets. The driving mode is selected by moving the shift lever to the appropriate position. In “D” mode, all four gears are used. This position is recommended for normal driving situations. Once the lever is placed in the “3” position, gear shifting is limited to the first three gears, which is optimal for long, gradual climbs and descents. In “2” mode, only first and second gears can be used, which allows the car to cope with steep slopes, especially when towing a trailer. The “B” mode allows engine braking.
