DSTC: definition, function, principle of operation and causes of failure

DSTC, which means Dynamic Stability & Traction Control is a system used in Volvo models. In 1998, it was first installed on the Volvo S80 sedan. The system makes an important contribution to vehicle safety. It improves handling and maneuverability and prevents skidding and wheel slip.

How DSTC works

To maintain stability, the lane desired by the driver is compared with the actual lane of the vehicle. To determine the correct course, a processor uses information about the steering angle, the pressure in the brake system and the position of the brake light switch. The following parameters are used to determine the actual direction of travel: wheel speed, yaw rate and centrifugal force.

If necessary, the system brakes to bring the vehicle back on the desired course. In addition, it is possible to reduce engine torque for this purpose by adjusting the amount of fuel injected.

This system is always active and cannot be switched off. However, the driver can activate the sport mode, in which the system then allows “controlled skidding”, for example.
