CommandShift transmissions: essential information, types, characteristics and technical parameters

CommandShift is the name for the manual shift function of the country's automatic transmissions Rover models. It has been used since 2003. It makes it possible to mimic the operation of a manual gearbox, which offers various advantages. For example, if you are considering accelerating when overtaking or braking the engine when driving downhill, this function is ideal. Manual control enables safer starts on slippery surfaces and increases the vehicle's off-road capability when driving on ice, sand and snow. This function is essential for a sporty driving style.

How CommandShift works

The transmissions equipped with a CommandShift function are classic automatic transmissions with planetary gears, a torque converter and a lock-up function. The switch to manual operation differs depending on the vehicle model and version. For example, on the Discovery Sport, turn the rotary switch on the center console to the “S” position. Shifting up and down is via rocker switches.

On the Range Rover Sport, the transmission mode is selected using the shift lever. To switch to manual mode, move the shifter to the “Sport” position, then slide it to the “+” or “–” position to shift up or down a gear.
