TFSI (Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection) is a brand name of Volkswagen group. It designates turbocharged engines with a direct injection system, which Audi models have been equipped with since 2004. This designation is also used for a number of versions of 2-liter engines for SEAT, Škoda and Volkswagen models.
Features of TFSI engines
Most TFSI engines have 4 cylinders and are equipped with 8 or 16 valves. The 6 cylinder, 24 valve versions are much rarer. The engine block is usually made of aluminum but can also be made of cast iron. The engines are turbocharged, often with variable geometry. The twin-turbo versions are also popular. The valve timing system is usually chain or belt driven. However, there are also versions of the timing mechanism that use a combination of chain and belt.
