ASC (Automatic Stability Control) is a feature of Jaguar and BMW -models used system. It was introduced in 1997. The system reduces engine power, which prevents slippage. This system improves vehicle dynamics and maneuverability on slippery roads and prevents skidding.
How ASC works
ASC is in close contact with the anti-lock braking system, with which a common control unit is shared. The control unit monitors the speed of the wheels using the ABS sensors. As soon as one of them starts to slip, the engine control unit (DME) is activated. This sends a command to the motor to limit the power output. This is done by turning off one or more injectors. In addition, the ignition timing and the throttle valve position can be adjusted.
As soon as you turn the ignition key, the system is automatically activated. However, if you are driving with snow chains or on sand or fresh snow, it is advisable to switch off the system by pressing the button on the center console. Press the button for a few seconds to turn off the system.
Popular cars with ASC
- Jaguar XJ8
- BMW 5 Series E39, 3 Series E46, 6 Series E63, 7 Series E65, E66, E67
Causes for defects
- ! Faulty wheel speed sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or mass airflow sensor
- ! Throttle valve defect
- ! The electrical cables of sensors, relays or control units are damaged
- ! Fitting tires with different tread patterns on one axle
