4motion is a patented brand name for all-wheel drive systems in Volkswagen cars. It has been used since 1998. Until then, all-wheel drive variants were referred to as “Syncro”. One of the main advantages of this system is that it offers increased off-road mobility on rough terrain and on loose or slippery surfaces.
How it works
The permanent 4motion is used in vehicles equipped with a longitudinal engine. This works with the help of a Torsen locking differential. It distributes the engine's torque according to the condition of the road surface and transfers most of it to the axle with better traction.
An electronically controlled Haldex multi-plate clutch is integrated into the automatic system. Under normal conditions, full torque is only transmitted to the front axle. If the front wheels slip, the rear wheels are activated and up to 100% of the torque can then be transferred to them for a short time.
All-wheel drive is less common. It is activated by the driver and ensures a firm connection between the front and rear axles. It was specially developed for driving off-road and on slippery surfaces.
