TSP: definition, function, principle of operation and causes of failure

TSP (Trailer Stability Program) is a stability control for trailers, installed in Opel and Vauxhall vehicles. It prevents the trailer from swinging, prevents the trailer from tipping over and helps keep it on course. It is part of the Electronic Stability Control ESP.

How TSP works

This system automatically detects whether a trailer is present. It activates at speeds above 60 km/h. The same sensors are used for the system as for the ESP. These sensors analyze the rotational speed of the vehicle's wheels, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, steering angle and a number of other readings to determine if the trailer is about to sway. This data is then compared to the default parameters specified in the TSP settings.

Individual wheels are braked if deviations from the parameters are detected. This is done with the ABS pump and solenoid valves. In addition, the position of the throttle valve is adjusted so that the engine torque can be reduced.
