Tiptronic S is an automatic transmission with intelligent software that Porsche models are equipped. If necessary, it allows the driver to shift gears manually. It is an improved variant of the Tiptronic automatic transmission of this brand. It first appeared on the Porsche Boxster S in 2000. Nowadays various models from Porsche and Volkswagen are equipped with it.
How Tiptronic S works
Tiptronic S is based on classic automatic transmissions equipped with a hydraulic torque converter. Special switches on the steering wheel or shift paddles are provided for manual shifting. This is especially useful for sports cars, as there are fewer distractions while driving because the driver doesn't have to take their hands off the wheel. Shifting into the desired gear is almost as quick as with a manual gearbox. In addition, the shift lever can be placed in the “M” position and then shifted to a higher or lower gear by sliding it in the “+” or “-” direction.
