The Q-System is an automatic transmission with a manual transmission mode. This system was used in the Alfa Romeo 156s built from 1999 to 2005, equipped with a 2.5-liter V6 engine rated at 190 hp and 192 hp. It is based on the Aisin AW50-40LE (AF14) 4-speed manual transmission.
The Q system offers three automatic modes: City, Sport and Ice. In addition, the driver can switch to a fully manual transmission, where he can operate the clutch himself. It should be noted that unlike many automatic manual transmissions, the Q system features an H-pattern shifter, common to manual transmissions, making the system more intuitive to use. In addition, there is no electronic control intervening in manual shifting to protect the gearbox from errors, which in turn has a great positive impact on the dynamics of the car.
Frequent defects of the Q-system
- The friction clutch drum is prone to cracking.
- Leakage of the hydraulic torque converter and drive shaft seals occurs prematurely.
- If the transmission oil level is too low, the mechanical components of the transmission wear out quickly.
