Check Engine Lights Up On Dash: Power Light Causes And Remedy

Check Engine is an operational indicator that indicates a problem with the engine or related systems. In modern cars, it also informs about malfunctions of the ignition system and automatic transmission, changes in engine revolutions within a certain period of time or fuel ratio, etc.

During normal operation, when all the indicators are correct, the indicator light comes on when you turn the key in the ignition and goes out immediately when the engine starts to work. But if the warning light keeps wheezing and suddenly flashes while driving, a number of systems and sensors need to be checked. In some cases, you can fix the problems yourself. But if, after the measures taken, the display „Check Engine“ still lights up, you should visit a workshop.

9 reasons why Check Engine lights up:

  1. The use of inferior fuel. In this case, the indicator light „Check Engine“ immediately after refueling. The only way to fix this is to replace the fuel with a better one.
  2. A fault in the fuel supply. Sometimes the indicator comes on when air is entering the fuel system for some reason, for example when the fuel cap is leaking.
  3. Low oil level. If the error message appears while the engine is warming up, there may be a leak in its lubrication system. In this case, check the entire engine compartment and note that no oil is dripping onto the engine case. A leak should be repaired immediately.
  4. A failed fuel pump or fuel filter is clogged. To test if they are working properly, the pressure in the fuel system should be measured with a mammometer. If the temperature is less than 3 atmospheres, the faulty components of the fuel system should be repaired or replaced.
  5. Fouling of the injection system. Clogging of the injectors negatively affects the operation of the engine, which is also signaled on the on-board computer. Cleaning the dirty components will solve the problem. You can either do it yourself using special tools or in a workshop.
  6. Lack of spark in one of the cylinders. With the help of a multimeter or a special tester you can check whether there are sparks in the cylinder. If this is not the case then a thorough diagnosis of the crankshaft position sensor, module, coil, distributor and spark plugs, high voltage wiring and electronic engine control unit should be performed.
  7. Faulty spark plugs. Thoroughly check all spark plugs. Traces of oil and gasoline on the threaded connection, black soot on the edge of the spark plug, dark brown or yellow spots on the surface of the electrodes and insulator indicate replacement.
  8. A lambda probe failure. This is where the indicator light is often displayed. Sometimes there are external signs of sensor breakage, such as large amounts of soot and dirt on the surface. Defective parts must be replaced.
  9. Disturbance in the catalytic converter. To check this, you can use the manometer to measure the back pressure during ejection. When idling, it must not be more than 10 kPa  and at 2500 rpm no more than 20 kPa.

When should you not continue

Sometimes the error message is no longer critical. In this case, you can still drive to the nearest workshop and carry out an exact diagnosis there. But sometimes it is strictly forbidden to continue driving when the „Check“ Engine lights up.

It is forbidden to continue driving the vehicle if

  1. Together with the indicator light &# 8222;Check engine“ other warning lights light up, such as
    • Engine overheating
    • Exhaust gas warning light
    • Oil warning light
    • Coolant level
  2. You observe the following:
    • Engine starts to vibrate
    • Engine speed is unstable at idle
    • Odor of exhaust gases in the cabin
  3. The engine speed remains in the lower range and the indicator light flashes

Conclusion

If the warning light comes on while driving, stop the vehicle and turn off the engine. Open the hood, check the operation of the above systems and try to solve the problem. If your attempts have not brought any results, assess the situation and decide whether you can continue driving. Drive to the nearest workshop or contact the appropriate service.

In any case, the indicator light „Check Engine“  not be ignored. Not only is it dangerous, but it can also lead to high repair costs. Be sure to pay attention to error messages, rectify the faults immediately and your vehicle will not let you down for a long time.
