4×4 Allgrip is an intelligent four-wheel drive system installed on Suzuki vehicles. It was first used on the Vitara model in 1988. The system controls the engine, the transmission and the driving dynamics control (ESP). This allows the optimum driving mode to be selected for all road and weather conditions. It also improves fuel efficiency and reduces polluting emissions.
The different 4×4 Allgrip-Systems and how they work
Auto (permanent): Swift– and Ignis models. A hydraulic multi-plate clutch with silicone oil is used in place of a center differential to distribute torque. The lubricant heats up and expands when the wheel speed differs on the different axles. Additional torque is then transmitted to the rear axle to prevent the front axle from slipping.
Select (automatic): This system is installed on the Vitara and SX4 models. The 4×4 Allgrip system uses data on road surface condition, throttle position and steering angle. This distributes the power to the rear axle before the front axle begins to slip. It offers four driving modes:
- Auto mode enables efficient fuel consumption. By default, the car has front-wheel drive. However, if the car detects that the front wheels are spinning, the all-wheel drive will automatically engage.
- Sport mode improves maneuverability by distributing torque to the rear axle when needed. In addition, the engine responds faster when the accelerator pedal is pressed.
- Snow mode ensures safe driving and stable road holding on slippery and snowy roads. It distributes the power to all four wheels according to the steering angle and the position of the accelerator pedal.
- Lock mode optimizes the vehicle's off-road mobility. It splits engine torque equally between both axles.
The desired 4×4 Allgrip mode can be selected with a switch installed on the center console.
Pro (switchable): It is designed for driving on rough terrain and installed in Jimmy SUVs. A transfer case is installed between the cardan shafts. It offers a low gear ratio in difficult road conditions and a high one in normal conditions. If necessary, the axles can be tightly coupled and the torque distributed evenly.
